Notice how you see less pests in the fall and winter? This does not mean they aren’t around. Once the weather starts cooling down, pests will shelter in your home. Contact Alert One and make sure you have a pest control plan in place before critters start moving in- this way you will be even more prepared once the Summer season starts again.

Things You Can Do Now

There are several things you an do now to prevent pests from comping into your home. It’s best to prepare your home before the cool of autumn.
Inspect Your Home for Entry Points

Take time to inspect your home for entry points. These can be gaps or large cracks in the exterior of your home. This is a good time to check the seals on your doors and windows- this not only helps keeps pests out but drafts as well. When inspecting the interior of your home keep these same principles in mind. Make sure all entry points are sealed and old weather stripping is replaced.

Make Sure to Look Up & Down

This is a great time to give your attic and basement/crawlspace a look over. Larger, furrier pests like squirrels and mice, make homes in low traffic areas like attics and basements. Make sure to look through your insulation too- this is a perfect spot for pests to burrow. Cockroaches are known to eat insulation to sustain life- so look for those too!

Be Aware

Simple note taking spots in your home with activity is one of the best first steps in starting a pest control plan that works. Notice the activity. When inspecting the exterior make note of all insect nests, and paths you see to properly inform your pest technician. Also make note of animal droppings and things like chewed wires or damaged insulation. This will provide your technician with the proper information to give you the best pest service possible.

Pests to Look Out for in the Fall & Winter

The pests you’ll need to look out for during the colder months are called overwintering pests. This term just means they survive during the winter. These pests will seek the warmth of your home, when it starts cooling down outside.

Most common overwintering pests:

  • Stinging Insects
  • Lady beetles
  • Rodents
  • Ants
  • Stink bugs
  • Box elders
